Voices of Colour – Awards for All 2022
Voices of Colour Project has been developed as a direct result of the changing political and environmental situations which have led to many families and individuals experiencing injustice and discrimination in Sandwell. Cases of injustice and discrimination have risen in BAME populations, who were already experiencing many inequalities and had limited access to opportunities. It is a growing concern that the pandemic has widened the disparities which will lead to further challenges in BAME populations and other populations impacting their health and wellbeing.
Currently there is no such support mechanism in place within Sandwell which seeks to address the range of barriers faced by these communities; these include, the under reporting of racial harassment and discrimination, crimes committed against these communities, due to their fear and distrust of the police and other such public bodies, lack of cultural barriers and language barriers.
Moreover, research suggests that BAME populations, asylum & refugee community and the gypsy and traveler communities are so used to racism that they think it is the norm. .Therefore, through raising awareness and tailored support mechanisms, this project will ensure that an increase of self-confidence, self-esteem, and a reduction of social isolation is instilled into these communities and will encourage more reporting of racial harassment/discrimination cases using the support systems currently in place.
This project will work in partnership and collaboration with the current networks RES has established in Sandwell, such as statutory, private and voluntary sectors. There are 44 different languages spoken in Sandwell with a variety of voluntary sector and faith groups providing services such as welfare advice, community learning and physical activity, but may not be able to address incidents of injustice, discrimination and racism.
